While it definitely tastes “Navy” there are bright and fruity elements to it along with that spiciness that makes it really interesting and layered, you’ll find a marriage of rums from the four cornerstones of the Royal Navy blend: Jamaica, Barbados, Guyana, and Trinidad.

A blend of 6 to 15 years old with the presence of prestigious rums up to 50 years old, this Don Q is subtle but discreet, powerful but measured rum. Very complex, with spicy notes, hints of chocolate, roasted coffee, cinnamon with a finish of notes of caramel, toffee, wood and liquorice.

Another great Don Q Rum and one that is loved by every most every Tiki bartender. It is made with a blend of Rums aged for a minimum of three years while it seems to me that this blend also includes Rums that are much older. I am very pleasantly surprised that this is a tasty and complex Rum that just happens to be bottled at flame thrower strength.

Cockspur XO is a work of art. This vintage rum is aged to perfection in American bourbon-oak barrels and, only then, the best casks are hand-selected by our master-blender. These are then blended together and left to marry in Spanish Oloroso sherry casks.

A gently aged white rum with a distinctive notes of citrus and vanilla that leaves a warm, spicy oak taste on the palate.

The significantly higher age is immediately noticeable in intensity and complexity. Oak tones are overly clear and bring with them a whole load of spices: cinnamon and nutmeg, subtle clove, vanilla, saffron and a very fine smoke also come through. There are more fruit notes, which can be found here, but also rich honey, caramel and coffee and walnuts on a long warm finish.

Dried fruits and deep sherry on the bouquet. Burnt toffee and fudge come with an underlying sweetness. Thick liquid on the palate, with spice immediate. The molasses rum is joined by a little Agricole rum from sugar cane juice, as in French overseas departments like Martinique. The Embargo Añejo Exquisito Rum is an exciting, successful experiment by the duo Alexandre Sirech and Jean Moueix. The blended rum from the Caribbean was allowed to mature for several years.

The pale Embargo Añejo Blanco Rum is almost colourless, but not completely clear. This has to do with the fact that the distillates of the blend briefly rested in oak barrels, without a real maturation storage taking place. This refinement has helped the blended rum find its centre and be a little finer than the classics.

Embargo Añejo Esplendido is the most upscale and oldest creation of the Embargo range. This Guatemalan-dominated rum is blended with three light rums (Cuba, Trinidad & Tobago) and an agricultural rum from a famous Martinique distillery.

The bouquet shows rich spice and intense notes of creamy vanilla and oak. Buttery on the palate with caramel and banana chips, hints of bourbon barrel char, allspice, nutmeg and vanilla with hints of clove. The finish is long, rich and spicy. Very warming.

Ron Legendario Añejo Blanco is a Cuban white rum that has been briefly aged in American white oak.

Similar to their Añejo Blanco, this Cuban rum from Ron Legendario also starts out as a blanco and is then briefly aged in American white oak using the Solera method.

This Cuban rum is aged up to 5 years in American white oak barrels which gives it its gold color and name – Dorado translates to “golden” in English.

A blend of different aged Cuban rums up to 6 years old, flavoured with a little Muscatel wine and married for 15 days in American oak barrels before finally being filtered through carbon and silica sand.

The Barbet Column Still was brought to Diplomático’s La Miel distillery in 1959. This continuous distillation system is originally from France. Using high quality sugar cane molasses, the distillate is aged in American white oak barrels until it reaches its optimum maturity, resulting in a unique rum.

The Batch Kettle Still was brought to Diplomático’s La Miel distillery in 1959. This semi-artisanal distillation system is originally from Canada, where it was employed for the production of American whisky. Using the best sugar cane honeys, this unique distillate is aged for 6 years in American white oak barrels, that previously served to age bourbon and scotch, resulting in a delicious medium-body and complex rum.
