Altos Las Hormigas winery is coming up on 20 years old, with its origins tracing back to 1995, back then Malbec was still largely unknown in the USA and lesser known in Argentina. In that year, entrepreneurial spirit Antonio Morescalchi and winemaker Alberto Antonini explored the viticultural potential of Argentina. Alberto had identified Malbec as having special potential in Mendoza. Both founders came from Italy with backgrounds in wine and their efforts gave birth to a dream of making wine in Argentina. In December 1995 216 hectares of land were purchased in Lujan de Cuyo, a prime viticultural area. It did not take long for Antonio and Alberto to start recruiting some real talent, including Attilio Pagli (a winemaker from Tuscany with two 100 point wines to his resume), Alan Scerbanenko (Italo-Swiss businessman), and Antonio Terni (Italo-Argentine winemaker). Soon after that came Carlos Vazquez as vineyard manager, with 20 years of experience working for the Catenas, and Pedro Parra who has a PHD in Terroir studies from the National Agronomy Institute in Paris. Together they have some of the most experienced and skilled brains in Argentina, which leaves no excuse for not making world class wines. Their combined wealth of experience as a winemaking team, as well as their never-ending experimentation and desire to produce the best wines that Argentina can offer, has made Altos Las Hormigas a Malbec specialist, with a reputation as one of the country’s top few producers of this variety.

This Malbec is deep violet-red in colour. The bouquet displays characteristic notes of red fruits, raspberries and freshly picked plums with white pepper. This wine is all about freshness – the palate is supple and juicy, with soft but structured tannins and a long juicy finish.
