Wine has been made at Kleine Zalze since 1695. Today, this family-owned winery, 3 km outside Stellenbosch, in the heart of the Cape Winelands, continues the tradition of producing wines of outstanding quality. Since Kobus Basson purchased the property in 1996, extensive modernisation and upgrading of the cellar has been undertaken, and the vineyards were replanted with new clones. Numerous local and international awards and accolades that Kleine Zalze’s wines have received indicate that these investments have been worthwhile. Kleine Zalze’s philosophy is simple: success begins in the vineyards and exceptional wines are made possible by careful management of the farm’s natural assets via innovative canopy management and the selection of vine clones that are specifically suited to the various soils and slopes. In the cellar, traditional winemaking methods are aided by modern equipment, resulting in wines of a uniquely South African style. The intensity of the ‘New World’ in its full fruit flavours, combine with the elegance and structure of the ‘Old World’, yielding wines of character, complexity, and balance, reflecting our given terroir and climate. This refined approach to viticulture and winemaking, together with the attention to detail and the personal touch that goes with being a family-owned estate, contribute to the ongoing success of Kleine Zalze’s wines. Kleine Zalze wines have seen consistent successes across the entire range, both locally and internationally. Kleine Zalze’s activities interact with the environment, since our raw materials come from nature and the processes we carry out generate impacts on the water, soil and air. Our activities would not be possible without the support of the surroundings in which we operate. Our main interest is to preserve this environment … Nicholas Cleef acquired Kleine Zalze in 1695, his belief that Stellenbosch had the potential to produce world class wines led to him developing Kleine Zalze into a wine estate. The Cleef’s range of wine was developed as a tribute to his vision and belief which has led to Kleine Zalze being a successful quality producer since his days of inception.
Aromas of lime, pear, citrus and orange peel fruit. The Chardonnay of the Stellenbosch area, with the extended lees contact in the barrels, adds complexity and mouth feel to the blend. The grapes from the Robertson Karoo soils give citrus mineral characters with a flinty finish on the palate. This style of wine ensures a fresh, round, crisp aftertaste with clean, strong varietal fruit.
