Scotsman John Riddoch founded what is now Wynns Coonawarra Estate in the late 19th century. He planted his first vines in 1891 and by 1896 had completed the estate’s famous three gabled winery, an image that is reflected on the Wynns Coonawarra Estate labels to this day. It wasn’t until 1951 however, that two Melbourne wine merchants, Samuel and David Wynn, purchased Riddoch’s original vineyards and renamed the winery. Today, Wynns Coonawarra Estate is the region’s single largest vineyard holder, with the best and most established vineyards in the district. Wynns Coonawarra Estate was the first winery to be established in the Coonawarra, by John Riddoch in 1896. Wynns Coonawarra Estate was the first winery to be established in the Coonawarra, by John Riddoch in 1896. The winery is located on the world famous strip of ‘Terra Rossa’ soil that produces fruit with exceptional quality. A relatively new addition to the Wynns stable to compliment the Coonawarra Cabernet Shiraz Merlot and the Coonawarra Shiraz, The Siding Cabernet Sauvignon brings lovely varietal and regional character in a Cabernet that is approachable on release, but also benefits from a few years in the medium term cellar. According to chief winemaker, Sue Hodder, The Siding Cabernet Sauvignon aims to deliver a leading affordable Cabernet that showcases exceptional varietal and region characteristics.
The palate is filled with flavours of raspberry, red fruits, and cedary oak accentuated by a hint of mint. The wine is medium bodied with gentle tannins and finishes with a lovely, soft persistence of fruit. This is a great example of Cabernet Sauvignon with all the right varietal cues on display – mint, brambly notes and brooding darkness, but with reined in tannins making this a delicious drink.
